The Hexagon Project
The International Interdependence Hexagon Project asks young people worldwide to create art within the infinitely inter-linking shape of a hexagon. The hexagon is a metaphor for interconnectedness, and students are encouraged to explore global issues of social justice.
Solutions based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals
In response to the project, Year 10 students created a collaborative relief mural exploring solutions based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. After researching a specific goal, students worked together to represent their solution in visual form. They designed an image to communicate their idea, skillfully modelled their design in clay and glazed their finished hexagon tiles that formed a larger mural.
Our mural received praise from Elizabeth M. Burkhauser, Chair of the International Interdependence Hexagon Project. Stating that:
“We are elated with what you have done with your students! They have addressed multiple issues of an interdependent nature – AND you guided them to create SOLUTIONS!! The messages are clear and thoughtful and powerful!”
Sustainable Fashion
The following year, students researched the detrimental effects fast fashion can have on people working in the garment industry and the environment. Students investigated sustainable alternatives to fast fashion. This included buying ethical and sustainable brands, purchasing and up-cycling clothes from secondhand stores, and investing in “slow fashion” (buying clothes that you love, that will last and never go out of date). They advocated that we can still have a passion for fashion, but recommend that we are informed about where our clothes are coming from.
The most logical choice of media for our hexagons was recycled fabric from discarded clothing.
